This remarkable coin-operated Mammut gramophone was discovered in the storeroom of a century-old restaurant deep in the Black Forest, near Gutach. Although time and storage conditions had left it heavily soiled, the instrument was found complete—an exceptional circumstance for a piece of such rarity.

A meticulous restoration has since been undertaken, consisting of:

  • Full disassembly of the apparatus

  • Replacement of the fractured spring

  • Precision adjustment of the motor and the entire coin-operated mechanism

  • Polishing of exterior surfaces

  • Nickel-plating of components where required

  • Restoration of the soundbox, including a new mica diaphragm, fresh rubber gaskets, and reconstruction of the fragmented outer ring

  • Careful cleaning of the cabinet, with full preservation of its original finish

This example represents the second version of the Mammut coin-operated gramophone produced at the Leipzig factory. The earlier iteration, created in 1903, remained virtually experimental, with only a handful of units known. By 1904, this improved model was introduced to the market and advertised extensively in the press. Yet its revolutionary concept—transforming the ambiance of taverns and restaurants through mechanical music—proved challenging for contemporary audiences, and production numbers remained very limited.

It is precisely this scarcity, combined with its historical significance, that today makes the second version of the Mammut one of the most coveted and distinguished gramophones among discerning collectors.
